Houston police: 2 cold-case killings, 6 years apart, linked by DNA .by Jeff McShan / KHOU 11 News
HOUSTON – Houston police are looking at two cold-case slayings that were committed by the same man, according to DNA tests.
The victims lived in the same neighborhood, and the killings happened six years apart.
Every crime scene picture tells a story, and DNA even more. But with all the evidence gathered at the two different crime scenes, the end remained a mystery.
"Well that’s the thing. It’s a definite probability that this guy could have done more murders," Sgt. Michael Peters said.
In 1983, just west of downtown, newlywed  was found brutally stabbed to death inside her home. She was just 20 years old.
HPD believes the motive was robbery. Money was taken from her purse and her piggy bank with change was missing.
Since a killer was never found, Sgt. Peters with HPD’s Cold Case Squad decided to take another look, 28 years later.
"We are always looking for murders for solve-ability factors," Sgt. Peters said.
HPD felt good about the case because the killer accidentally cut himself with a knife that day, so his DNA was left behind.
The DNA was extracted and recently entered into a national database, but sadly there was no match. If the killer would have been arrested and charged in a felony later in his life, his DNA would have been on file.
While Sgt. Peters was back to square one, another detective was looking into another unsolved killing that happened six years later in 1989.
"The other one, the woman, is probably convinced to come in off the street into a vacant house to where she is beaten with a brick, strangled, and then sexually assaulted," Sgt. Peters said.
Like Sgt Peter’s case, the DNA that entered into the national computer led them nowhere.
Well, sort of.
It turns out the DNA profile from the two cases is the same.
Even though the motives were different, even though the women lived different lifestyles, they were both killed by the same man, police said.
"The thing is the big difference is the time difference. You are talking six years between each murder," Sgt. Peters said.
When investigators began to discuss the cases with each other, they also learned the two women lived just a street apart. One lived on Wagner Street and the other lived on East Street, both near the Heights, just off of Washington Avenue.
"I think it’s a guy in the neighborhood that did the murder. I think it’s somebody out here, that lived out here, that they saw every day," said Sgt. Peters.
Given the six-year time difference, it’s likely the suspect killed someone else, too. HPD’s Cold Case Squad said it didn’t find any other killings in the area, and his DNA profile hasn’t surfaced again—at least not yet.
Anyone with information is urged to call HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
